of an american ambassador. >> expect it to be about joe biden's amazing debate performances. i talked to some folks in the paul ryan camp and they're saying look, this is his first time out, joe biden is going up against the likes of hillary clinton and barack obama. and he's a skilled debater. chris: sandbagging it. >> he beat sarah palin, right? >> well, what's to say about that? >> in private meetings when the iranians were here for the u.n. general assembly, they were dropping broad hints they were ready to make a nuclear deal after the election. take that with a grain of salt because the spreek leaders, the guy who makes the -- supreme leaders, the guy who makes the decisions this week were watching the iranian economy collapse so a deal may be imminent. chris: good news for everybody. when we come back, the big question of the week, who do you pick to win the vice-presidential debate this thursday be right back. >> "the chris matthews show" is brought to you by charles schwab. let's talk about the personal attention you and barnhill: you hear a lot of talk about question seven... so let
at tomorrow night's debate, wolf. >> we'll have a lot more on what joe biden has just said and the very tough reaction coming in from the romney campaign. gloria borger is standing by on that front. both of these campaigns are bringing major surrogates to denver to appear in the so-called spin room after the debate tomorrow night. what are you learning about the romney campaign's people who are coming in? >> reporter: wolf, it's probably no surprise rob portman, mitt romney's chief sparring partner playing barack obama in the debate, he'll be in the spin room. but we've also learned that marco rubio, the rising star, senator from florida who had a prominent role at the republican convention, he will also be in the room. it's interesting to note this comes just as mitt romney's making some new gestures in some outreach, you could say, to the latino community. notable he will be there as well. >> very interesting. thanks very, very much, jim acosta in littleton, colorado. >>> all right. this just coming in to cnn. the results of our brand new poll among latinos all over the united states. certa
. the only time they did something was when they brought joe biden in to negotiate with the republicans. so maybe obama sensed that. but i don't know -- it's worthy to investigate. >> sean: yeah. one theory i have, i want to ask you one more question about your theory. i would argue, $6 trilon in debt, very hard to explain away. i would argue that, you know when 2012 economically is worse than 2011, which was worse than 2010, unemployment in 2012, fewer jobs in this year than last year and the year before. things are trending down. obviously, that's troubling for the president in terms of trying to defend it. but back to your theory, if he was so bad that there something else going on, that could be troubling in and of itself. you know, we need presidents that are strong. you know, bill clinton, as critical as i was during monica lewinsky, you have to hand it to him, his ability to compartmentalize, do his job, deal with impeachment was, frankly, pretty amazing, in terms of the skill level and his ability to handle that. >> steel will. the survivor. there is no question about that. it's wor
debates. one next week with pall and all joe biden -- i am looking forward-- >>> this is going to be a doozy. >> it will be great. i don't want to under-sell joe biden because he's pretty clever with good rhetoric. he obviously sticks his foot in his mouth, but he is quick on his feet and he is relatable to people. so i don't think we can take that lightly. but two more debates with the president. two more opportunities, hopefully, as unfiltered as we were last week. i think, of all the problems and all of the -- i think huge disappointments with this president at the debate, he continues to perpetrate this myth that somehow he has this magic plan to get our deficit and debts under control, after he himself number 1, delivered three massive deficits, every year he has been president-- >>> $6 trillion. to be accurate, as of today, $5.54 trillion in new debt. it will be $6 trillion in new obama debt. >> he is the -- he is the debt king of the world. and he is coming out here and telling the american people -- he has a plan. well, unfortunately, speeches are not plans. and i think

-- >> let's move on to the vp debate. joe biden and paul ryan. let me make a prediction. i think joe biden will verbally destroy paul ryan, and i think he will the salvation of barack obama. >> you want to bet? >> i tend to agree with you, piers. senator biden is someone who is a fire brand for sure. and one of the things that came out of this debate, we can all agree president obama did not bring his "a" game and romney had a good night it will take a lot more to undo what has taken two years to burn in voters' brains. >> biden is the champion of the middle class, and that's what we want to hear. >> look, i'm going to put myself out there i w't promise 12 million jobs. >> don't bet $10,000 either. >> well, i never do that, i'm not a bedditting lady, but i wi bet a cocktail or two. >> the reason i think you're wrong -- i've watched the convention speeches and i thought joe biden, with the possibility of bill clinton, made the best speech. >> absolutely. he will bring it. >> and i think joe biden will destroy paul ryan. >> absolutely not. absolutely not. >> i think you're wrong. >> are you
if you are elected president. >> the vice presidential debate. joe biden coming up. he stepped in it a little bit this week with the comment about the middle class being buried the last four years. take a look. >> how they can justify, how they can justify raising taxes on the middle class that's been buried the last four years. how in lord's name can they justify raising their taxes with these tax cuts? >> two questions, is there more pressure on the vice president now to be aggressive coming off the president's debate, and are you worried about gaffes like that? >> well, look, i don't think that was a gaffe, george. i think what the vice president was talking about is what he's talked about every day, which is a series of eight years of -- >> he said they were buried the last four years. >> well, we've been digging out for what was an avalanche of bad economic decisions over the past eight years during the bush administration, and what mitt romney and paul ryan want to do is take us back to that exact same failed economic theory, talk down tax cuts, eviscerating the investmen

are raised now for the paul ryan versus joe biden debate. the obama campaign i don't think can afford the perception that they lost two in a row. i would think vice president joe biden's fingernails are beginning to sweat about next wednesday because he's somewhat in the same position as president obama. he's been vice president in for four years. had a lot of things going. been a long time since he's debated. paul ryan has been in the cut and thrust of congress, to be better prepared. however, ryan is in the shoes president obama was in last night and the expectations are high for ryan. i think most people feel that paul ryan will walk joe biden's dog in this debate, and that's a down for him. i would venture that the vice presidential debate may get the largest audience of any vice presidential de debate we've had so far. >> in 2008 with the introduction of sarah palin was the first time the vice presidential debate was ever the highest 01:39:43:rate ed debate. we have this again. >> governor romney, last night, people say he mangled the truth to put it gently. the obama campaign --
up next time and you're going to see joe biden unleashed, i think, in the next debate. >> that's going to be fun. >> maybe the most interesting of all of them. >> tout that one this week. biden is twice his aim. he's a lot more friendly. he's almost like a big, you know, a big st. bernard. he slopers all over you but he's very personable and he's very hard to dislike. the other guy is a little colder version of humanity. >> this could be one of the best debates of the see son and main one of the best debates across the board. this is a classic -- a very different type of candidate. one is very affable and one is very, you know, a nerdy sort of guy. i think it's going to be fascinating to watch this one, and i think it's going to be important, maybe more important than past vice presidential debates have been in the sense that if ryan does well, i think it's really going to substantially help that momentum that romney has established last week and will be very important and so the stakes are very high on this one. >> you know what? that's another great point. after the 2004 deba
of debate can we expect there between joe biden and paul ryan? >> fii think if you ask a lot o republican folks, they're looking forward to this more so than presidential debate. they think they have a rock star in paul ryan. he'll have the opportunity to be fully unleashed in that 90-minute session with joe biden. one of the things he said to chris wallace today is he's not a line guy. he's not going to try to razzle-dazzle you with some line that sounds like it's been coined and in his back pocket for a month and a half. he's going to talk about the policies he and mitt romney want to put into play. he knows that vice president biden is going to come after him on his medicare and budget. >> how's he going to respond? >> they're ready. they want to be able to make the case to the american people that the real threat to medicare and its future is the president's affordable health care act, which they lovingly refer to as obamacare, and the fact that the president's plan extracts $716 million away to pay for that. what paul ryan isn't telling his supporters is that his budget proposal also

in syria and iran. >> paul: that was vice president joe biden at a campaign stop in pennsylvania suggesting that mitt romney is ready to go to war in iran and syria. it's the theme they are pushing with the president himself getting in on the act. in an interview on 60 minutes. mr. robe responding to criticism said, quote, if governor romney is suggesting we should start another war, he should say so. so rumors of war, dan. what the political strategy here or do you think there is one? >> obviously we are in a moment when everything barack obama says is related to his reelection. so it is with this. a key element of the obama reelection strategy has to do with perceived voter fatigue over wars, iraq and afghanistan. >> paul: tide of war are receding? >> exactly. first thing he said i ended the war in iraq. how he is binding down afghanistan. from that premise he is suggesting to people that mitt romney just might start up again because he is advised by the same people that got us into the war in iraq. >> paul: and a lot of people don't like the long years of war. how fair is the charge? >>
event focus on the running mates. vice president joe biden and congressman paul ryan face off in thursday in their only debate. the show down will be held in danville, kentucky. and both will spend the days leading up to the debate preparing. president obama out on the campaign trail is showing energy he didn't show at the first presidential debate in denver. >> my opponent is doing a little tap dance. at the debate the other night trying to wiggle out of stuff he's been saying for a year. doing like, it was like a "dancing with the stars". or maybe it was "extreme makeover." debate edition. >> reporter: expect to see a more aggressive debater when they face off again. for romney the debate offered a chance to question the president's priorities. >> thought it was a good chance for us to ask each other questions. i asked the president some of the questions i know people across america have wanted to ask him. i asked him, for instance, why with 23 million americans that were looking for work and want ad president that would focus on getting the economy going he in stead spent h
towards mitt romney. i now think there is an enormous amount of pressure on joe biden next week as he goes into the debate with paul ryan. after that 2004 first debate debacle it was dick cheney. it will be interesting to see how this sets up. >> lawrence? >> governor o-mal mgovernor, yo candidate get up there. some people feel mitt romney dominated by bringing more energy to it. how did you see it? >> well, i think the president has always had a certain dignified reserve and i think that's one of the admirable qualities about the president. as i was watching the debate i think what mitt romney really needed tonight was a big game changer. he needed to address the observation that he hasn't had any specifics for all of these great promises. you know, $5 trillion in cuts but it won't add to the deficit, trust me i'll tell you later. eat cake, lose weight. so i don't think he got the game changer he needed tonight. i do think the president was particularly strong, though, in getting governor romney to admit that he does want to turn medicare into a voucher program and i also believe the pres
. >> karen, how much is the president looking to joe biden to continue come thursday, continue now that the tide has turned on the heels of wednesday? he's got to put in a performance if he wants to keep this thing moving forward and upward >> yes. a couple of things with the thursday debate. i mean, number one, earlier this week when people were oh, about the president's performance. the fact we've got biden's going to be great. if nothing else i guarantee you it will be very entertaining to watch joe biden and paul ryan. and there again, i think there is an opportunity to -- i think romney's gotten some deserved momentum out of -- he had a very strong performance. he's gotten a momentum. i think his campaign is trying to figure out how to keep that momentum going into next week. the debate might be where that momentum is blunted a little bit. joe biden is going to say look, paul, how much time do you need? here's a white board. here's a pen. how much time do you need to do the math? we're here for you. let's work it out. >> hey rich, how much in terms of paul ryan, how much do yo
until november. >> my advice is for joe biden. do not try to overwhen sate by going in there charging like the bulls of pam plo na in your debate. the only thing that may be worse than an overly passive barack obama is an overly aggressive joe biden. >> a bull in a china shop maybe. >> maybe. listen, if he's hard to control when he's on script, just imagine him unscripted in a debate. >> but the american people still like him. >> yeah. >> still like him. >> he's a likable guy. >> he's a regular joe. >> i think all republicans should love him because he is the gift that keeps on giving. >> so is paul ryan to some extent. go ahead, governor. >> it's been exactly one year since steve jobs passing. and my unsolicited advice today is for all of the mavericks in america, all the people that walked against the crowd, all the people who disagree with everybody in the room, everybody in a classroom that says i don't agree with what's going on here today, the mavericks have made america great. if we lose our mavericks, we lose our edge. this is unsolicited advice for the mavericks, you keep it
